An active volcano is described to be a volcano that has erupted in the past 10,000 (past ice age). It is also classified as a volcano that currently vents gasses or lava or is likely to do so in the future. In some circumstances it may be difficult to define if a volcano is active or dormant.

Santa Maria has been erupting for around 101 years, it towers of the Pacific coastal plain in Guatemala. It is 3,772 meters tall. One of the most brutal eruptions in 1902 cause the crater that now lies on top of the volcano.
